When I first heard the term 'Golden Hour', I thought it was just another product or service that the wedding industry was trying to upsell us. After having what it actually is explained to me by many of my photographer friends, I hoped we would get to experience golden hour during our wedding day and my wonderful Maid of Honour Faith insisted on having our schedule for photos during this time before the sun would set. Luckily, our wedding venue 'Parnassus' has a deck which is facing westward, with a glorious view of the Gippsland hills.
Golden hour is the coveted last hour before sunset, where the setting sun creates a beautiful golden hue and a warm colour temperature. The light is a little softer and highly directional which allows you to created a lovely palette for skin tones and allows you to get a little artistic. In the lead up to the day, Dave and I had made peace with the weather predictions which looked a little grim at 3pm in the afternoon. However, lo and behold, golden hour made its appearance at 5:30pm giving us a few gorgeous photos to cherish, and a lovely sunset for our guests to enjoy.
I was lucky enough to have my dear friend Tracy and her husband (of only a month) Tony take the photographs for us on the day, which made the process far more meaningful for me and Dave. Tracy is a crack up and a barrel of laughs, and the sort of person every bride needs to keep things running smoothly on their wedding day. On the day she also took on a 9 year old apprentice by the named of Bella, who is my cousin Bec's daughter. Bella was an enthusiastic learner and went as far as blowing bubbles in our faces in order to achieve that 'artistic' look.
